Literature of Belonging

Literature of Belonging is a junior high English Language Arts course centered on the universal theme of belonging, exploring identity, community, and acceptance. Utilizing a diverse range of literary and informational texts, the curriculum develops core ELA skills in reading analysis, writing, and thoughtful discussion.

Over the course of the year, the class includes a half credit of high school composition, focusing on argumentative writing, research skills, and rhetorical analysis. Students will produce a portfolio of formal essays and research-based writing, providing a strong foundation for future academic work while fulfilling a critical graduation requirement. The course highlights varied voices and experiences, fostering an inclusive classroom where all students feel they belong.

Students will analyze how authors use literary elements to portray characters' experiences with belonging and will reflect on their own understanding of identity and community. Diverse Short Stories and Essays

Develop a deep understanding of the structure, functions, and processes of the U.S. government and political system, as framed by the Constitution and its historical development.

Analyze Foundational Texts and Rights

Analyze and interpret foundational documents, Supreme Court decisions, and other primary and secondary sources to understand the evolution and application of democratic principles and individual freedoms in the United States.

Evaluate Political Participation

Evaluate the various ways in which individuals and groups participate in the American political system and influence public policy, connecting these actions to the ongoing pursuit of democracy and freedom.

Apply Political Science Skills

 Apply critical thinking and political science skills, including data analysis and argumentative writing, to assess contemporary political issues and debates within the historical context of democracy and freedom in the U.S.
