College Algebra

This course provides a comprehensive review and extension of algebraic concepts, with a strong emphasis on the study of functions and their applications. The course also covers advanced techniques for solving equations and inequalities, systems of equations and inequalities, sequences and series, and an introduction to matrices and basic probability. The primary objective is to develop a strong foundation in algebraic reasoning, analytical skills, and problem-solving strategies essential for success in higher-level mathematics and science courses.

Course Goals

Upon successful completion of College Algebra, students will be able to:
  • Analyze and graph various types of functions, including transformations and inverses.
  • Solve a wide range of equations and inequalities (polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, radical, absolute value).
  • Perform operations with and analyze properties of complex numbers.
  • Solve systems of equations and inequalities using multiple methods, including matrices.
  • Understand and apply the properties of exponential and logarithmic functions to solve real-world problems.
  • Work with sequences and series, including arithmetic and geometric progressions.
  • Apply fundamental concepts of matrices and determinants.

Considerations for 10th Grade

For highly advanced 10th graders who have completed Algebra 2 (and potentially Geometry), this course offers a robust preparation for calculus. The pace can be quite fast, with a strong emphasis on theoretical understanding and problem-solving.

Considerations for 11th Grade

This is a very common grade level for College Algebra, often serving as a strong pre-calculus course. Students should have a solid grasp of Algebra 2 concepts. The focus should be on building conceptual depth and applying skills to complex problems.

Considerations for 12th grade

Students taking College Algebra in 12th grade are often doing so to fulfill a college-level math requirement before entering university or as a final preparation before a calculus sequence. The course can be taught with a direct emphasis on preparing students for college math placements and coursework, including independent study and higher-level problem sets.
