Anatomy & Physiology

Through a combination of lectures, readings, diagrams, models, and often hands-on activities like dissections and microscopy, students gain a comprehensive understanding of how the body is built and how it operates. The course typically covers the major organ systems, examining their individual components and their integrated roles in maintaining homeostasis – the body's stable internal environment.

Course Goals

Upon successful completion of A&P, students will be able to:
  • Understand the structure (anatomy) and function (physiology) of the major human body systems.
  • Explain how the body is organized and the concept of homeostasis, and how systems work together to maintain it.
  • Identify and correctly use essential anatomical and medical terminology.
  • Develop observational skills through laboratory work, such as microscopy and dissections, to study anatomical structures.

and more!

Considerations for 11th Grade

Having completed biology, they have an understanding of biological principles that can be applied to human systems. They are generally more developed in their ability to handle complex information and abstract concepts. The course can provide a solid science elective or a stepping stone for those considering health-related fields.

Considerations for 12th Grade

A&P is also frequently taken by 12th graders. At this stage, students are often more mature learners with well-developed study habits. They may be taking A&P as a capstone high school science course, as preparation for college-level science (especially for health science majors), or as an interesting elective. They are generally well-equipped to handle the vocabulary and integrated nature of the subject matter. For students who have completed chemistry, there can be valuable connections made regarding the chemical processes underlying physiological functions.
