Algebra 1

Algebra 1 is a foundational high school mathematics course designed to introduce students to the basic principles of algebraic thinking and problem-solving. This course bridges the gap between arithmetic and higher-level mathematics by emphasizing the use of variables, expressions, equations, and inequalities to model and solve real-world problems. Students will develop a deep understanding of linear relationships, functions, and their various representations (tables, graphs, equations).  The course aims to build critical thinking, logical reasoning, and analytical skills essential for success in subsequent mathematics courses and in various STEM fields.

Course Goals

Upon successful completion of Algebra 1, students will be able to:
  • Understand and apply the properties of real numbers.
  • Write, evaluate, and simplify algebraic expressions.
  • Solve linear equations and inequalities in one variable.
  • Graph and analyze linear equations and inequalities in two variables.
  • Understand and apply the concept of a function, including function notation.
  • Solve systems of linear equations and inequalities.
  • Perform operations with polynomials.
  • Apply algebraic concepts to solve real-world problems.

and more!

Considerations for 8th Grade

For an accelerated 8th-grade course, topics might move at a quicker pace, and some more advanced applications or deeper dives into topics like radical expressions might be deferred to Algebra 2. The focus would be on solidifying the core skills.

Considerations for 9th Grade

This scope and sequence is ideal for a standard 9th-grade Algebra 1 course, allowing ample time for conceptual understanding and practice.

Considerations for 10th grade

For students taking Algebra 1 in 10th grade (perhaps as a review or if they struggled previously), a slightly accelerated pace could be adopted, or more emphasis could be placed on real-world applications and problem-solving strategies to make the content more engaging and relevant to older students.
